7th Grade Communication Skills

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our Language Arts classroom and share my expectations for the class. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any problems, questions, or concerns. I am always happy to meet with students and parents. I have very high expectations of you and will expect you to do your best at all times. We will be focusing on writing/grammar, but we will also be reading at least one novel per quarter as a whole class and students will read their A.R. book independently. We will study all parts of speech, new vocabulary words and have extensive practice with many types of writing. This year will be challenging, so be prepared to work hard, do your best and have fun!

I am requesting  that both students and parents sign and return the last page of this letter indicating that you have read the procedures and agree to cooperate with them.

Students will enter the classroom quietly and begin their Bell Ringer-students will receive a sentence at the beginning of the week and each day they will apply a different aspect of grammar to the sentence. Student Journals will be written in 2/3 times per week and the topics will differ. Vocabulary words will be given at the beginning of the week-definitions/maps will be worked on during the week (homework/classwork) and different types of assessments (def. quiz, paragraph writing, sentence completion) will be given on the words. When the class is reading a novel we will have projects/activities to coincide with the novel, and a test will be given upon completion of the novel.  Every other week we will have a silent reading day to focus on A.R. points. Students will be working on many different types of writing (descriptive, narrative, expository, persuasive, and business/technical)These writings(rough drafts/final copies) will be kept in a Writing portfolio and students will choose their best samples to keep.

County wide Writing Assessments-7th grade students will be assessed on the argumentative form of writing(problem solution/evaluative)-these assessments will consist of two on demand(75minute timed response to a prompt ) and two content(writing from Social studies, Science, or Math)writing assessments.  They will be graded and keptin a separate portfolio that will follow them up through the tenth grade. I will focus on the proper style and format for these assessments.

Grading

Due dates will be upheld!  If a student turns in work after the due date (without an excused absence) 10 pts. will be taken off for each late day-after three days pass it will be a zero.

Students will receive a weekly grade for their daily bell ringer.

Homework will be graded as a 100/0-complete/incomplete.

Writing will be graded twice-rough draft/final copy.

A.R. points will be counted as a grade.
